Department of Education iCentre

Captovate, in partnership with national tech firm NEC, recently delivered an exciting and innovative new solution for the NT Department of Education in iCentre, a smart, centralised application to support all technology and IT infrastructure within the entire NT schools system.

The aim of the ambitious iCentre project was to create a centralised, easy-to-used portal that will improve access to IT support services within the department, simplify problem reporting and provide high quality, user friendly self help and reporting tools of all Department of Education staff.

Captovate played a highly specialised role in the delivery of the project.  With our unique skill set across information architecture, web usability, user experience design and creative design, we were able to complement and add value to the more traditional technical development capacities of NEC.  The brief was to turn the highly complex Microsoft SharePoint back end system into something engaging and highly usable for a large, non-technical user audience.  This meant carefully planning out the user experience that the portal would deliver from a human perspective, and having our designer work closely with our own expert SharePoint developer to implement the visual design and interactive experience as a front end to the complex back end system built by NEC.

To give an idea of just how sophisticated this project was, iCentre draws upon and coherently unifies data from separate systems currently used to manage operations, system configuration, applications, wired and wireless device information, network performance metrics and real-time bandwidth consumption.  Using the concept of 'hubs', this vast amount of complex data is organised into actionable groups, removing the complexity of having to source and interpret data from multiple disparate sources, and bringing the data and actions to the surface in ways that are accessible to even novice users across the Department's teaching and support staff.

The iCentre portal will enhance DoE’s capabilities to deliver ICT support to its users, which today covers more than 245 locations and over 40,000 staff and students.  In combining cutting edge technology with outstanding design and usability, Captovate is proud to be a part of the team behind this major innovation in ICT service delivery for Governments.
